Calculate the Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR). CAGR is the constant annual growth rate that would connect a beginning value to an ending value over a specified number of years.

How to calculate CAGR

  1. Enter the beginning value.
  2. Enter the ending value.
  3. Enter the number of years between the two values.
  4. Click "Calculate" to find the annualized growth percentage.

CAGR Formula

CAGR = (ending / beginning)^(1 / years) − 1 Percentage = CAGR × 100

CAGR uses a fractional power of an ending-to-beginning ratio to determine the smoothed annualized rate of return. It is not the same as total percentage change, nor does it represent the actual return achieved in every individual year.

Calculating growth over 2 years

Beginning value100
Ending value121
Years2
CAGR = (121 / 100)^(1 / 2) − 1 = 1.21^0.5 − 1 = 0.10
Result: 10%

Notes

  • The beginning value must be greater than zero, the ending value must be 0 or greater, and years must be greater than zero.
  • A full decline (e.g., 100 to 0) results in exactly -100%. A constant value (e.g., 100 to 100 over 5 years) results in 0%.
  • Negative beginning or ending values are not supported in this calculator, as they can lead to ambiguous or non-real results depending on the fractional time period.
  • This mathematical tool does not provide investment or financial advice.
  • Calculations use JavaScript floating-point numbers, so some decimal results may be approximate.
