Reduce any fraction to its simplest lowest terms instantly using its greatest common divisor.
How to simplify a fraction
- Enter the numerator (the top number).
- Enter the denominator (the bottom number).
- The calculator will compute the greatest common divisor (GCD) and output the simplified fraction.
Simplification Method
Simplified Numerator = Numerator ÷ GCD
Simplified Denominator = Denominator ÷ GCD
To simplify a fraction, you find the greatest common divisor (GCD) between the numerator and denominator, then divide both numbers by it. The calculator performs this exactly using pure integer arithmetic.
Simplifying 8 / 12
Fraction8 / 12
1. Find GCD(8, 12) = 4
2. Divide 8 ÷ 4 = 2
3. Divide 12 ÷ 4 = 3
Result: 2 / 3
Notes
- The calculator preserves exact integer relationships within JavaScript’s safe-integer range.
- If you enter a fraction with a negative denominator, the calculator automatically normalizes it so the negative sign appears on the numerator (e.g., 8 / -12 becomes -2 / 3).
- A zero numerator evaluates correctly to 0 / 1, while a zero denominator is mathematically invalid and will be rejected.
