Calculate the mean, median, and mode for a set of numbers. These statistics provide different ways to understand the central tendency of your dataset.

How to calculate mean, median, and mode

  1. Enter at least one numeric value into the dataset list.
  2. Click "Add value" to append more numbers to your list.
  3. Click "Calculate" to determine the mean, median, and mode(s) instantly.

Definitions

Mean = sum / count Median = middle value (or average of two middle values) Mode = most frequent value(s)

The mean is the arithmetic average of all values. Internally, this calculator uses a stable incremental mean algorithm to preserve numerical accuracy. The median is the middle value when the numbers are sorted; if there is an even number of values, it is the average of the two middle ones. Note that sorting occurs internally without modifying your original dataset. The mode is the value that appears most often. If no value repeats, there is no mode. If multiple values tie for the highest frequency, there are multiple modes.

Example calculation

Dataset1, 2, 2, 3, 4
Mean = (1 + 2 + 2 + 3 + 4) / 5 Median = middle of [1, 2, 2, 3, 4] is 2 Mode = 2 occurs most frequently
Result: Mean = 2.4, Median = 2, Mode = 2

Notes

  • The calculator requires at least one value.
  • Finite real numbers, zero, negative values, and decimals are all allowed.
  • No-mode example: A dataset like "1, 2, 3" has no mode because the highest frequency is 1.
  • Multimodal example: A dataset like "1, 1, 2, 2, 3" has modes 1 and 2.
  • These statistics use JavaScript floating-point numbers, so some decimal results may be approximate.
